The Map

A road, thirty stops, and a stone at every one.

Nothing here directs you like a machine. It is a map. You look at it, you see where you are standing, and you see the next place worth walking to — the adventure, the stone, the burden you will set down there. Christian walked it with a pack on his back and picked up a better way as he went. You do the same, and then you walk it back for someone else.

Earth side · the road

Hinds' Feet on High Places

On the ground it looks like a woman walking with two companions she did not choose, building an altar at each stop and putting the stone she is handed into her pocket. She cannot see the high place from where she is. The map does not remove the climb; it tells her the stones are real and the pocket is hers.

Heaven side · the ascent

The same stretch, from above

Seen from the mountain it is not thirty tasks but thirty degrees of ascent, and every law is an attribute of God being lent to her for the day. The road and the climb are the same road. One is measured in miles, the other in likeness.

The Law of Purpose

Day 7 and Day 8 add to Day 9. Plenty gave her a supply that keeps arriving; Possibility gave her an opening. Add supply to access and you must have a center, or both will scatter you. That center is Purpose.

  • C · The Attribute

    Centered

Settled at the middle — everything she carries arranged around one point.

  • E · The Character

    Equilibriate

To bring into balance — to set weight against weight until the thing holds still.

  • O · The Perfection

    Order

The arrangement given to her — and the request that becomes work and money.

The stone you pick up

Fluorite

carries Purpose

The stone that grows in perfect octahedrons — order made visible, purpose held at the center.

The adventure

The Bread That Multiplied

Leiden, the Netherlands · 1574

Scarcity is survived by order and generosity together. Either one alone fails.

Burden set down here: The hoarding reflex.

Og Mandino · Scroll 9 — Action

“I will act now.”

The thing you have been arranging: begin it inside the hour, badly if need be.

Read it aloud three times today — morning, midday, before sleep.

Earth readingOn the earth road this is a stretch of Much-Afraid's climb: she builds an altar, gives up something she was holding, and is handed a stone for her pocket — Fluorite. She cannot see the high place from here. She walks anyway.

Mountain readingOn the mountain side the same stretch is a degree of ascent: the law of Purpose is not a technique but an attribute of God being lent to her, and the stone in her pocket is the receipt.

The thirty stops

The Park

Every land in the kingdom, and you are here.

It is built like walking into an old village. You come in at the thatch — the commoner's gate, where nothing is locked. The streets teach you the place. Further in are the courtyards where the trade is kept, and past them the great doors, where the king lives. Keep exploring; the map lights up behind you.
